The NN/LM PNR encourages librarians to contact AIDS organizations or health professionals dealing with AIDS in their communities who have not been their traditional users of library services, and to design projects that enable such organizations or individuals to obtain needed information. Applicants are encouraged to consider a GRATEFUL MED publicity or training component, since GRATEFUL MED is a standard and simple way to access NLM's AIDS databases, for which online charges have recently been removed. The NN/LM PNR will provide GRATEFUL MED and Internet training materials, information on obtaining free NLM codes for the AIDS databases, copies of specially developed pathfinders (both for health care providers and also consumers), and also ongoing support for project librarians.
The expected level of funding is $500 per institution, but proposals for more than that amount will be considered it it appears justified and if funding permits. Project funds may be used for travel, printing, equipment rental, personnel, training materials, communications, or other categories if a good explanation is given.
Applicants must be employed by a health sciences library organization in the Pacific Northwest, the library must be a member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, and the librarian must have had experience with GRATEFUL MED. The NN/LM staff will train any interested librarian to use GRATEFUL MED. In addition, proposals will be evaluated for
