From Bench to Bedside
Project Description
The University of Washington is conducting a project through
its Regional Medical Library contract with the National Library
of Medicine to explore the efficacy of Internet connections and
resources in community hospitals. This pilot connections endeavor
is part of a multi-disciplinary project which also includes a
research component exploring the use of a client/server model to
access anatomical images in a wide-area network environment, and
a clinical component which addresses the problem of providing DNA
diagnostic laboratory directory information to clinicians in
community practice.

The hospital connections component is coordinated by the staff of
the Regional Medical Library and the hospital librarians at the
project sites, with assistance from NorthWestNet, the regional
computing and communications network. Seven community hospitals
in five states, and the Virtual Medical Center in Montana, are
targeted in this project. The methods used to connect the
hospitals to the Internet include both high speed, dedicated
connections for simultaneous, multi-user access at three of the
sites as well as single-user access -- using modems and voice grade
telephone lines -- at four of the sites. Costs, benefits, and
relative suitability of the different connection methods are
being assessed. The utility of Internet resources and services to
hospital staff is a key focus.
