Marketing As If Your Library Depended On It!

Pat Wagner is an educator, writer, consultant and trainer, and is known for her practical and good-humored approaches to library issues. She is a frequent presenter at state and regional medical library organization workshops and MLA chapter meetings, as well as national MLA programs. She has been a CE trainer since 2001. Pat has worked for libraries since 1978, focusing on leadership, management and personnel issues as well as strategic planning, project management and trend analysis. Pat and her husband Leif Smith own Pattern Research, Inc. a 32 year old research and training business in Denver. They specialize in supporting the work of innovators and explorers in the public, private and nonprofit sectors through research, consulting and training.

Description: Do you want to increase the use of your medical library? Improve financial and political support from both users and decision-makers?

Being a great medical librarian is not enough to earn your share of users, money and influence. Marketing is the key, and it requires more than handing out promotional bookmarks. Marketing is based on awareness, change and response: understanding medical library users and decision-makers from their own points of view, responding with changes in collections and services, and presenting benefits on their terms.

Participants will learn to collect and evaluate data, use marketing in strategic plans, influence administrators and decision-makers and bring in new (and "lost") library users. The workshop will focus on how to improve promotional activities by partnering with library users and decision-makers, identifying target audiences and writing copy for print and electronic media that "sells" the library by communicating benefits.

Pat Wagner of Pattern Research will be offering her "Marketing As If Your Library Depended on It" class this fall in Denver and in Kansas City. Denver dates are August 24 and November 2. Kansas City dates are September 7 and October 31. There will be 12 Continuing Education credits available for this workshop. There is no charge for these classes, but Network membership is required!
